Lake Skadar and its connected Bojana Delta is one of Europe's top five sites for wintering birds and is also an Important Bird Area. Home to the rare Dalmatian pelican and the world's second largest colony of pygmy cormorant, come here at any time of year and you will have the chance to see wetland life in all its glory, from glossy ibis and squacco heron to bitterns, grebes, egrets, terns and more.
Over 280 different species of bird are attracted by the variety of habitats at these amazing and extensive wetlands (more than 200 square kilometres in all), including open water, floating vegetation, rocky shores, marshland , rushing rivers and forested hinterland. Expert guided boat trip:
Leave no avian unidentified as you head out onto the lake for the day with a National Park birding expert. Cruising to all the top birding sites, you can track down pygmy cormorants, herons (night, squacco, grey, purple), bitterns, grebes (great crested, little), egrets, terns and more with the help of a birding expert fluent in English or other foreign languages. Come in Spring / early Summer to see the flamboyant mating rituals of breeding season or in Autumn for the wonder of migration. Start point: Virpazar.

Kayak birding tours:
Option 1: Paddle to the Manastirska Tapija and Morača Delta reserves by kayak - this trip involves a 4-hour circular kayak around the twin-peaked island of Vranjina. You will paddle through two of the lake's best bird reserves, enjoying sightings of herons, bitterns, grebes, kingfishers, egrets, terns and more. Led by a qualified kayak instructor, you can get closer to the birdlife than you'd ever imagine! Start point: Vranjina.
Option 2: Paddling to the pelicans. With a 3m wingspan, the Dalmatian pelican is one of the world's heaviest flying birds. This amazing trip takes you down an old smugglers' channel by kayak and out across a field of lily pads towards the breeding grounds at Pančevo Oko, always maintaining a safe distance of 300m so as to not disturb these amazing creatures. You may see as many as 40 individuals flying overhead for a stunning experience that is offered by no other tour operator! Start point: Virpazar.

Pelican boat trip:
Take a boat trip to see the famous Dalmatian pelicans - our partners will ferry you by private boat to the lake's remote Northern shores, where you will have the chance to see this rare and magnificent bird's breeding grounds. On the way back, there is the chance to see island monasteries and the Morača Delta birding site. Lunch included - just bring a book (it's a 6 hour round trip) and your best binoculars! Ulcinj Saltpans and Bojana Delta:
Right by the border with Albania, close to Lake Skadar's exit to the sea via the Bojana river lies a series of shallow pans. Montenegro's top site for waders, they attract an exciting array of water birds (241 species recorded) including Greater Flamingo, Collared Pratincole, Kentish Plover, Black-winged Stilt and Roller. The site is an Important Bird Area and considered one of Europe's most important locations for winter migration with its position on the Southeast Europe flyway. The day includes an expert guide and transport there and back. Start point: Virpazar.
